The Power of Now – Eckhart Tolle

The Power of NowBuku The Power of Now, terbitan tahun 1999, adalah buku wajib baca bagi mereka yang mencari spiritualitas modern.

Oneness.

Quoted Paragraphs

Do you find this frightening? Or is it a relief to know this? All of these things you will have to relinquish sooner or later. Perhaps you find it as yet hard to believe, and I am certainly not asking you to believe that your identity cannot be found in any of those things. You will know the truth of it for yourself. You will know it at the latest when you feel death approaching. Death is a stripping away of all that is not you. The secret of life is to “die before you die” – and find that there is no death.

[..........]

The word God has become empty of meaning through thousands of years of misuse. I use it sometimes, but I do so sparingly. By misuse, I mean that people who have never even glimpsed the realm of the sacred, the infinite vastness behind that word, use it with great conviction, as if they knew what they are talking about. Or they argue against it, as if they knew what it is that they are denying. This misuse gives rise to absurd beliefs, assertions, and egoic delusions, such as “My or our God is the only true God, and your God is false,” or Nietzsche’s famous statement “God is dead.”

[..........]

The philosopher Descartes believed that he had found the most fundamental truth when he made his famous statement: “I think, therefore I am.” He had, in fact, given expression to the most basic error: to equate thinking with Being and identity with thinking. The compulsive thinker, which means almost everyone, lives in a state of apparent separateness, in an insanely complex world of continuous problems and conflict, a world that reflects the ever-increasing fragmentation of the mind. Enlightenment is a state of wholeness, of being “at one” and therefore at peace. At one with life in its manifested aspect, the world, as well as with your deepest self and life unmanifested – at one with Being. Enlightenment is not only the end of suffering and of continuous conflict within and without, but also the end of the dreadful enslavement to incessant thinking. What an incredible liberation this is!

[..........]

The great Zen master Rinzai, in order to take his students’ attention away from time, would often raise his finger and slowly ask: “What, at this moment, is lacking?” A powerful question that does not require an answer on the level of the mind. It is designed to take your attention deeply into the Now. A similar question in the Zen tradition is this: “If not now, when?”
The Now is also central to the teaching of Sufism, the mystical branch of Islam. Sufis have a saying: “The Sufi is the son of time present.” And Rumi, the great poet and teacher of Sufism, declares: “Past and future veil God from our sight; burn up both of them with fire.”
Meister Eckhart, the thirteenth-century spiritual teacher, summed it all up beautifully: “Time is what keeps the light from reaching us. There is no greater obstacle to God than time.”

[..........]

How is it possible that humans killed in excess of 100 million fellow humans in the twentieth century alone? Humans inflicting pain of such magnitude on one another is beyond anything you can imagine. And that’s not taking into account the mental, emotional and physical violence, the torture, pain, and cruelty they continue to inflict on each other as well as on other sentient beings on a daily basis.
Do they act in this way because they are in touch with their natural state, the joy of life within? Of course not. Only people who are in a deeply negative state, who feel very bad indeed, would create such a reality as a reflection of how they feel. Now they are engaged in destroying nature and the planet that sustains them. Unbelievable but true. Humans are a dangerously insane and very sick species. That’s not a judgment. Ifs a fact. It is also a fact that the sanity is there underneath the madness. Healing and redemption are available right now.

[..........]

What appears to us as space in our universe perceived through the mind and the senses is the Unmanifested itself, externalized. It is the “body” of God. And the greatest miracle is this: That stillness and vastness that enables the universe to be, is not just out there in space – it is also within you. When you are utterly and totally present, you encounter it as the still inner space of no-mind. Within you, it is vast in depth, not in extension. Spatial extension is ultimately a misperception of infinite depth – an attribute of the one transcendental reality.

[..........]

Every portal is a portal of death, the death of the false self. When you go through it, you cease to derive your identity from your psychological, mind-made form. You then realize that death is an illusion, just as your identification with form was an illusion. The end of illusion – that’s all that death is. It is painful only as long as you cling to illusion.

[..........]

In the state of enlightenment, you are yourself – “you’ and “yourself” merge into one. You do not judge yourself, you do not feel sorry for yourself, you are not proud of yourself, you do not love yourself, you do not hate yourself, and so on. The split caused by self reflective consciousness is healed, its curse removed. There is no “self” that you need to protect, defend, or feed anymore. When you are enlightened, there is one relationship that you no longer have: the relationship with yourself. Once you have given that up, all your other relationships will be love relationships.

An Extract from The Power of Now
By Eckhart Tolle

I have little use for the past and rarely think about it; however, I would briefly like to tell you how I came to be a spiritual teacher and how ‘The Power of Now’ came into existence.

Until my thirtieth year, I lived in a state of almost continuous anxiety interspersed with periods of suicidal depression. It feels now as if I am talking about some past lifetime or somebody else’s life.

Awakening

One night not long after my twenty-ninth birthday, I woke up in the early hours with a feeling of absolute dread. I had woken up with such a feeling many times before, but this time it was more intense than it had ever been. The silence of the night, the vague outlines of the furniture in the dark room, the distant noise of a passing train – everything felt so alien, so hostile, and so utterly meaningless that it created in me a deep loathing of the world. The most loathsome thing of all, however, was my own existence. What was the point in continuing to live with this burden of misery? Why carry on with this continuous struggle? I could feel that a deep longing for annihilation, for nonexistence, was now becoming much stronger than the instinctive desire to continue to live.

‘I cannot live with myself any longer.’ This was the thought that kept repeating itself in my mind. Then suddenly I became aware of what a peculiar thought it was. ‘Am I one or two? If I cannot live with myself, there must be two of me: the ‘I’ and the ‘self’ that ‘I’ cannot live with.’ ‘Maybe,’ I thought, ‘only one of them is real.’

I was so stunned by this strange realization that my mind stopped. I was fully conscious, but there were no more thoughts. Then I felt drawn into what seemed like a vortex of energy. It was a slow movement at first and then accelerated. I was gripped by an intense fear, and my body started to shake. I heard the words ‘resist nothing,’ as if spoken inside my chest. I could feel myself being sucked into a void. It felt as if the void was inside myself rather than outside. Suddenly, there was no more fear, and I let myself fall into that void. I have no recollection of what happened after that.

I was awakened by the chirping of a bird outside the window. I had never heard such a sound before. My eyes were still closed, and I saw the image of a precious diamond. Yes, if a diamond could make a sound, this is what it would be like. I opened my eyes. The first light of dawn was filtering through the curtains. Without any thought, I felt, I knew, that there is infinitely more to light than we realize. That soft luminosity filtering through the curtains was love itself. Tears came into my eyes. I got up and walked around the room. I recognized the room, and yet I knew that I had never truly seen it before. Everything was fresh and pristine, as if it had just come into existence. I picked up things, a pencil, an empty bottle, marvelling at the beauty and aliveness of it all. That day I walked around the city in utter amazement at the miracle of life on earth, as if I had just been born into this world.

Bliss

For the next five months, I lived in a state of uninterrupted deep peace and bliss. After that, it diminished somewhat in intensity, or perhaps it just seemed to because it became my natural state. I could still function in the world, although I realized that nothing I ever did could possibly add anything to what I already had.

Understanding

I knew, of course, that something profoundly significant had happened to me, but I didn’t understand it at all. It wasn’t until several years later, after I had read spiritual texts and spent time with spiritual teachers, that I realized that what everybody was looking for had already happened to me. I understood that the intense pressure of suffering that night must have forced my consciousness to withdraw from its identification with the unhappy and deeply fearful self, which is ultimately a fiction of the mind. This withdrawal must have been so complete that this false, suffering self immediately collapsed, just as if a plug had been pulled out of an inflatable toy. What was left then was my true nature as the ever-present I am: consciousness in its pure state prior to identification with form. Later I also learned to go into that inner timeless and deathless realm that I had originally perceived as a void and remain fully conscious. I dwelt in states of such indescribable bliss and sacredness that even the original experience I just described pales in comparison. A time came when, for a while, I was left with nothing on the physical plane. I had no relationships, no job, no home, no socially defined identity. I spent almost two years sitting on park benches in a state of the most intense joy.

But even the most beautiful experiences come and go. More fundamental, perhaps, than any experience is the undercurrent of peace that has never left me since then. Sometimes it is very strong, almost palpable, and others can feel it too. At other times, it is somewhere in the background, like a distant melody.

Sharing

Later, people would occasionally come up to me and say: ‘I want what you have. Can you give it to me, or show me how to get it?’ And I would say: ‘You have it already. You just can’t feel it because your mind is making too much noise.’ That answer later grew into my book, ‘The Power of Now’.

    Apologise, Yudi now is in confusing state to leave some comments for the above interesting article, so I need your help mr. Keep on doing brother, be succeeded. Allah bless you.

Hehehe… seneng banget deh, akhirnya berhasil membuka jati diri mas Yudi.

    Primary message of the above article:
    Belajarlah meditasi tanpa meninggalkan agama turunan. Jangan berhenti sebelum mencapai ketiadaan (kosong, hampa, suwung).

    Oh my God, Decartes who is the great philosopher is also mentioned on the article. As so far I knew he found the reflection and refraction laws of light proposed at the same time with Snellius. Of course we are in Indonesia are more familiar to the last name because he was from Holland. Bukan begitu mas Lambang, kemana mba Intan ya, apa dia sedang rampungkan PR nya yach?

  4. Tolle says nothing new.

    I see that the book is written in Q & A style. Based on my personal experience, such books cannot go into sufficient depth to enrich your (spiritual) understanding.

    By the way, the way Tolle describes Descartes tells us that he never comprehends Descartes’ ideas in his most famous as well as most misunderstood credo Cogito ergo sum.

    Hehehe..you are correct mas Lambang, since two years ago Yudi has been regestering as a college of post graduate at one of Fakultas Kedokteran in Jakarta under supervisor Dr. Tak Ta Bok for specialising to extent mr.p’s hate. Sorry according to my supervisor, Ta Bok of his name was taken from tabok word that means as hit a body from behind, so his name isn’t Tan Tjeng Box, okay? While mrs Intan is my senior colleague that now she is a doctor at one of famous hospital in Surabaya. She lives near Perkampungan Arab.

  6. Yudi says:

    Okay I would continue briefly of my interest to mathematics field. You know that every man have own dimention of his mr.p. I believe by certain teraphy, the dimention of mr.p can be extented until certain proportion, and in my research I am optimized can extent it until square root of two (akar 2) from initial dimention. Please delivery your pray for my success. I don’t know why mathematicians can’t create the square root of two easily, even they celebrate it as happy square root of two as commonly met on the internet.

    ==========================
    Lambang:

    Mas Yudi, di extend-nya pakai medication atau hanya exercise (ditarik-tarik, digepyok-gepyok atau dibandul)? Kalau medication, sepertinya sudah meneliti juga kandungan kimiawi teh basi, minyak lintah, tangkur buaya dan dan pasak bumi.
    Hehehe… Mak Erot version S3… :)

  7. Yudi says:

    @illumination, you look suitable as nara sumber of this article. Because when discussing about Decartes of course is very related to properties of light such as reflection and refraction. And don’t forget, in islamic religion, the light word means “nur” that were original all of angels. According physics, the light satisfies fermat laws that it will travel at the least of both time and distant, hehe..

Well mas Lambang, on the next comment I will give my opinion about the importance of sciences in attempting to treat all of physical phenomenon in universe that commonly called Ayat Kawniyyah. I hope Professor Mahfud MD read this article and having a lot of spare time comes here to discuss this topic with us.

    Hmm, jadi buka-buka rahasia nih. Emang bener sih saya nyangkul di rumah sakit. Tapi, saya masih mikir nih bung Yudi apa hubungan PR saya dengan perkampungan Arab yang anda sentil itu. Kalau menurut Pak Lambang apa ada hubungannya dengan energi spiritual ya. Atau jangan-jangan bung Yudi mau nginfoin kebiasaan wanita-wanita arab nih?

    ======================
    Lambang:
    Mbak Intan nyangkul di bidang studi yang sama atau ndak dengan mas Yudi? Kalau sama, ya mungkin maksud mas Yudi diminta untuk survey dan studi kasus di perkampungan Arab sekitar situ mbak…
    Energi spiritual dengan yang “itu” jelas ada hubungannya. Sudah disebutkan di kitab Dharmo dan Gatho itu. Di Qur’an juga disebutkan walupun tersamar. :mrgreen:

    ======================

  14. Yudi says:

    Mas Lambang, at your comments previously you always relate energy to spiritual. I think we must have equal understanding the term of energy. I don’t know the energy purposed here similar to physics understanding, that means the capability an object to do some work?

    ======================
    Lambang:

    In my perception, energy is a God creation in the form of scalar physical quantity, which is sometimes could be measured by using any current device, but sometimes not yet able to be measured, such as lightning power, big-bang blasting explosion and black hole energy. The detailed description may be found in this URL [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy].

    But in the other form, energy is a spiritual power (love, hate, aura, yin-yang) which can not be measured up to now, as defined in this URL [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_(esotericism)].

    I hope we will have the similar perception about the energy after reading those Wikipedia explanation. :)

    BTW, I am still curiously waiting your explanation about the importance of sciences in attempting to treat all of physical phenomenon in universe that commonly called Ayat Kawniyyah… :roll:

    Salam Persahabatan.
    ======================

  16. Yudi says:

    Okay, now I understand what you mean about the energy, espescially to answer the origin of the universe comes from. God creation? Of course I believe it as explained by my religion teachers.

  17. Yudi says:

    We know from Islamic perspective. Allah creates the universe and all of its contain only by said “kun fa ya kun”, but our task to treat it by sciences that we have. Several scientific scenarioes mentioned above have used to explain it. But don’t forget only Allah that know all of the secret of his creation. According to me, sciences only as appoximate tool to clarify. How about you mas Lambang?

    • Lambang says:

      Mas Yudi,
      I am agree with you that it is our job to proof the “kun fa ya kun” pamungkas word by current science. It has been proven that Aceh Tsunami caused by earth plate boundaries movement or collision. The similar proof also explains the Jogja earthquake. Those are not “kun fa ya kun” works. They have been explained by science.
      God is full of love and care, and it is a big mistakes if someone thinks that God punish part of His creation. The “kun fa ya kun” word is targeted to the old civilization around 600 AD. Sometimes in the long future, I believe that the “kun fa ya kun” works will be able to be explained by science. God will not create something just like abrakadabra mantra. Must be a sophisticated science explanation behind that such as the law of conservation of energy. Those scientific proof will shows amazingly that He is The Origin and He is The Grand Creator.
      Salam.

  18. Yudi says:

    I must type again that “only Allah that knows all of the secret of his creation”.

  19. Lambang says:

    Reading your last statement “only Allah that knows all of the secret of his creation”, I have another opinion. As an example, do human already discovered DNA and cancer cells structure? If yes, then I suggest a better statement “Allah knows all of the secret of his creation, and human also have a right to know these secrets by exploiting their scientific or supranatural abilities”.
    Salam.

:mrgreen:
